Delicate creatures with wings like panes of stained glass, Glass Moths are entirely harmless to the touch — but their flight leaves trails of fleeting illusions in the air behind them: faces half-remembered, snatches of voices, the outlines of forgotten places. Children chase them through summer evenings, delighted; elders watch them pass and look away, because the illusions a Glass Moth leaves are not random, and an old grief will sometimes recognize itself drifting by on borrowed wings. They mean nothing by it. They are only beautiful, and they only show what is already there.

Children chase them. Elders look away. The moth means nothing by either.
