Insectoid swarms that hum in dissonant chords, Hollow Drones have hard, shell-like bodies that are partly transparent, so that a cloud of them shimmers like broken glass given a will. They are everywhere associated with war: their sound is said to drive both beasts and men into unease, fraying the nerve and seeding panic long before any blow is struck. Whether they cause the dread or are merely drawn to it, no one agrees — but where the Hollow Drones gather and begin their tuneless droning, the wise gather their families and go.

Whether they bring the war or only smell it coming, no one waits to find out.
