Biography
Gwendlynn is the still center of Saint-Spire — the Supreme Mother whose word settles a room before she raises her voice, whose kindness to the abbey's orphans is matched only by how little she will say of herself.
The children think her old and gentle. The wiser among the staff suspect iron beneath the habit, and a history she has folded away so completely that even her grief has learned to keep quiet. She wears the title Mother like a veil drawn over something older — a bearing that comes from no cloister, a sorrow that comes from no ordinary loss.
For years she has waited on something she will not name, tending relics she calls mere ornaments, watching the mist at the abbey's edge as though it might one day answer her. When the stones of Saint-Spire begin, at last, to remember — she is the one who always knew they would.
Some thrones you abdicate. Some you simply carry where no one can see them.
To underestimate her is the oldest mistake in two worlds. Many have made it. None for long.
