Biography
Father Maurice has tended the souls of Saint-Spire for longer than most of its children have been alive — a stooped, soft-spoken priest with ink-stained fingers and an old man's patience for other people's secrets, if not his own.
The sisters consider him gentle. The cleverer orphans suspect he is something more: a man who reads too many languages for a country parson, who flinches at certain words, who keeps a lineage book and a locked drawer and a silence around his past that no one has ever been invited to break. He was a man of law, once, in a place he never names. Now he is a man of God — and he is wholly at peace with neither.
He took in a frightened child years ago and asked no questions he did not already know the answers to. He has been waiting, ever since, for a reckoning he is certain he deserves.
Maps hand out answers. What I can leave you is harder — the way to see what was always there.
Every secret he kept, he kept out of love. That will not make the unburdening of them any gentler.
