Biography

Meely is, as far as anyone at Saint-Spire knows, a cat — a small, watchful, faintly imperious creature who adopted a lonely boy years ago and has rarely left his side since.

She is not, the staff will admit, an ordinary cat. She turns up exactly where she is needed and never where she is not. She watches doorways like a sentry. She takes against certain people for no reason anyone can name, and is proven right about them with unsettling regularity. The boy named her Meely when he was small, and to him she is simply his — his shadow, his comfort, his one unchanging thing.

What she is, beneath the fur and the patience, she has never been able to tell him. She only keeps her watch — and waits for the night that watch will finally be called upon.

Some guardians wear armor. Some wear whiskers, and wait by the door.
